Together with the butterflies, the dragonflies are the most eye-catching insects in the north European nature. So far only one book has treated the Danish species of these beautiful and fascinating creatures: Espen Petersens dragonfly volume from 1910 in the series "Danmarks Fauna". Therefore the present book is long wanted and much needed. De danske guldsmede is an exceptionally beautiful book lavishly illustrated with very fine colour photographs of all Danish dragonfly species and their habitats. The book has a number of introductory chapters on Odonata in general and a systematic part treating all 53 species under the following headings: Introduction, identification, habitat, behaviour, lifecycle, flying time, and distribution. The description of the distribution of each species is supplemented with a map, that also covers the southernmost Norway, southern Sweden and northernmost Germany. There are illustrated keys to the adult larvae and larval skins and to the males and females of the adult dragonflies. The book is concluded with a short bibliography and two indexes, one to the dragonflies and one to the plant species mentioned in the book. De danske guldsmede should appeal to both professional and amateur entomologists as well as to those with a more general interest in the nature that surrounds us. Furthermore the book will be a most useful tool for those working with fresh water ecology and environment. Because of the many beautiful colour photographs of the dragonflies and their habitats, the book will also be of great interest to students of dragonflies, but without knowledge to the Danish language.
